Luke 1:36-38

“And behold, Elizabeth, your relative, has also conceived a son in her old age, and this is the sixth month for her who was called barren; for nothing will be impossible for God.”
Mary said, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord. May it be done to me according to your word.”

Parable 36 - Match Made in Heaven

Years ago, Kay had given up on men.

She had found a kindred spirit in Leslie, who had vowed never to marry.

They loved to go to movies together, discuss fashion, and try new restaurants.

But just as often, they would get together at one another’s apartment, have a meal, and spend the afternoon or evening reading.

No talking—just silently reading in each other’s comfortable presence.

So it came as quite a shock to Kay that Leslie announced she was dating a man named Henry.

“What?” asked Kay. “You’re kidding, right?”

“No, I’m not kidding. He’s really nice. I feel safe around him, and he’s funny. We laugh as much as we talk. I really like him.”

“I thought you liked me.”

“I do like you. You’re my best friend. But recently I felt a draw to give dating a chance, and then I met Henry.”

As the weeks turned into months and Leslie and Henry got more serious, Kay began to pray about her own situation. She asked God to let her know if she should date. This was difficult for her, because she knew she was overweight and felt unattractive in some ways. She didn’t want to open herself up to rejection. Her teenage years had already given her enough rejection for a lifetime.

Questions came up for her in prayer. Did she want a relationship? Was she being too cautious to protect herself?

Gradually, the answer emerged that she had been too scared to try to date anyone, but if the right person was out there, she was interested in trying. In her prayer, God seemed to suggest that if her friend Leslie could have a boyfriend, then she could as well.

Kay decided that she was open to dating, but it wasn’t like she had been turning people down. No one had asked her out on a date in years. So she joined a dating service and began seeing people. There were ups and downs as she met people—some real horror stories—but in the end, Kay found Quincy, someone she liked and respected.

Quincy liked Kay, too. They were taking it slow. Both of them had been hurt before, but they clearly were hitting it off.

Meditation

It’s amazing, isn’t it, how we can change? If we are open to new things happening in our lives, new possibilities can grow in us. It can be scary and hard to believe this. Mother Mary was startled and afraid when the Angel Gabriel came to see her and ask her the big question.

It must have been reassuring to hear that her cousin Elizabeth was now pregnant. If her older cousin was having a child, she could believe that it was possible for her as well.

If we take that message to heart, when we see amazing things happening to others, perhaps the same amazing things might happen for us. A lifelong quest for us is finding what God has in store for us. Not everyone needs a spouse. Prayer is the way we recognize our path with God. When we spend time in prayer, God’s will may become apparent to us.

A virgin birth is probably not in our future, but there may be something amazing that God has yet to show you.

After all, Kay and Quincy are still together.

You might say theirs is a match made in heaven.

Water the seed and ask yourself...

What is my prayer revealing to me about my path in life?

Viewer Discretion Advised Today's scripture and parable deal with the topic of infidelity, while nothing explicit is said in the story, it is a mature topic. We recommend discretion when listening with younger children. Sending to a friend? Copy the "Share" link and email that to your friends or family to avoid a mistaken unsubscribe.
